What I Learned from Seasoned Authors at the Written in the Northwest Book Fair

Attending the Written in the Northwest Book Fair as an author was an inspiring and insightful experience. Engaging with seasoned authors taught me valuable lessons about making the most of book fairs. Here’s what I learned:

1. Build Up Your Display

Vertical displays grab attention. Use banners that showcase your book cover, tagline, and your name. A tall, well-organized table with varying heights creates a professional look and makes it easier for readers to browse.

2. Stay at Eye Level

Engage directly with attendees by standing or using a tall chair. Eye-level interaction makes conversations more personal and inviting.

3. Target Genre-Specific Conventions

Attending genre-specific events can dramatically increase your chances of connecting with your audience. Whether it's fantasy, romance, or mystery, aligning with the right readers boosts sales and visibility.

4. Track Your Sales and Locations

Keep detailed notes on where you sell, the event demographics, and what worked or didn’t work. This information is invaluable for deciding which events to attend in the future. (Thank you, Thomas Gondolfi.)

5. Find Your Booth Style

Create a signature style for your booth that reflects your books and personality. This can include color schemes, decorations, or even unique giveaways that make you memorable.

6. Mini Books for Quick Sales

Short stories or excerpts turned into mini books at a lower price point can be great for quick sales and as a way to introduce new readers to your work.

7. Be Direct When Pitching

Not everyone will be your target audience, and that’s okay. When someone approaches your booth, ask directly: “Are you looking for a middle-grade urban fantasy?” This approach saves time and helps connect you with the right readers.

Bonus: Enjoy the Experience!

Networking with other authors and readers is a reward in itself. Every book fair is a learning opportunity and a chance to grow.

By implementing these strategies, I left the fair feeling more confident about future events. If you’re an author considering book fairs, give these tips a try—they might just transform your experience!
